Illinois Fighting Illini guard Andre Curbelo Trevor Ruszkowski-USA TODAY Sports /

After some “okay” starts who would you rather take the rest of the season TyTy Washington or Andre Curbelo? – Tristan Freeman (@hoopsnut351)

What a tremendous question to close the Sunday Mailbag. Anyone who is not familiar with these players let’s just recap. Andre Curbelo is the point guard for Illinois, and Illinois is one of the favorites to win the Big Ten. Curbelo does a little bit of everything for the Illini he can score, distribute, and is a good defender. He is a sophomore and when paired with Trent Frazier makes up one of the best backcourts in the country.

TyTy Washington Jr. is a five-star freshman who plays for Kentucky. Washington is one of the most explosive young players in the country.  He can jump out of a gym, is a great rebounder, and good passer. He also is a freshman running the point in one of the toughest conferences in the country.

For my money, and I had to pick one player to run my team for the rest of the season I would pick Andre Curbelo. As mentioned, Curbelo is one of the best point guards in the country and is really exciting in his own right. He has made his fair share of jaw-dropping plays.

The guard does have a tendency to turn it over in bunches, but I would take the turnovers if he continues to play at the level he is playing at. Curbelo isn’t a great shooter, but he impacts the game in so many other ways. He is an elite rebounder for a guard and a great passer. His being such a great passer is a huge asset for any team as the offense comes so much easier when players share the ball.

Curbelo has a really high turnover rate right now but that is going to come down as the season wears on. He had a really bad game against Marquette. Curbelo may not be the best defender on his team but he is still a great defender and would be the anchor of the defense for Illinois if not for Trent Frazier.
