NCAA Basketball: Biggest power conference disappointments so far in 2021-22
SEC: Missouri
The SEC currently has seven teams ranked in the AP Top 25 and eight teams in the top 50 of the NET, both the highest of any conference in the country. The top of the league has been incredibly strong to start the season, but the bottom has really struggled, led by Missouri.
Mizzou might be the worst power conference team in the country. Their NET ranking of No. 278 in the country would certainly suggest so.
The Tigers are currently 3-4 overall with a 14-point home loss to UMKC, a 23-point loss to Florida State, another home loss to Wichita State, and finally a 21-point loss to Liberty, a game in which they trailed 35-14 at halftime.
This team has major issues offensively, ranking No. 328 in eFG%, No. 341 in 3P%, and No. 313 in turnover rate, per KenPom. The lone bright spot has been junior F Kobe Brown (15.3 PPG, 53.6% FG) who leads the team in scoring and is the only player on the team shooting above 42% from the field (min. 2 FGA per game).
Cuonzo Martin’s Tigers did not enter the season with incredibly high expectations after losing several key players this offseason, but they were picked to finish tenth in the SEC preseason poll. At this rate, they will be lucky to win more than a couple of games in conference play.
