SEC Basketball power rankings: Alabama rises, Kentucky and Arkansas drops
The Jerry Stackhouse era continues to disappoint early in its third season. The Commodores are 5-4 but have lost three straight to SMU, Temple, and Loyola Chicago. They also scored 37 points earlier this season in a home loss to VCU.
The return of junior PG Scotty Pippen, Jr. gave Vandy some hope entering the season, but that has quickly faded. Pippen’s averages are down from 20.8 PPG and 4.9 APG last season to 17.4 PPG and 2.6 APG this season on just 41.7% shooting from the field and 34.5% shooting from deep. He has still been clearly their best player, but we have yet to see a significant improvement that would make him a first-round NBA Draft pick.
As you may have guessed by the fact that they scored 37 points in an entire game against VCU, this team struggles offensively. More precisely, they struggle shooting the ball, ranking No. 275 in eFG% and No. 294 in 3P% nationally.
Vanderbilt is better than both Missouri and Georgia and could win several games in SEC play (likely over Missouri and Georgia), but this will still likely be the team’s third straight losing season overall and in conference play under Stackhouse.
