21. Maryland Terrapins

I could probably start with the fact that the head coach isn’t even with the team anymore should indicate what I and everyone else think about Maryland right now. Mark Turgeon opted to part ways with the team over a week ago, something that was partly expected in the offseason but was expedited just a month into the season.

There were some high hopes in the preseason, thanks to the return of 15 ppg scorer Eric Ayala and last season’s breakout forward Donta Scott, combined with notable newcomers, Fatts Russell and big man Qudus Wahab. Yet so far, the newcomers have been okay, while the returning veterans have struggled mightily.

The team nearly lost to George Washington and Vermont, before falling to George Mason at home. Back-to-back losses to Virginia Tech and Louisville spelled the end for the Turgeon era, with interim head coach Danny Manning losing to Northwestern.

Maryland did beat No. 20 Florida this past weekend, with the hope being that it’ll spark newfound confidence in the team to still make a run. There’s talent on paper and the frontcourt is good enough to compete in the Big Ten but unless Ayala gets back into form, this team is at best .500 in league play and likely missing out on the NCAA Tournament. Let’s see what Coach Manning can do going forward.
