Well-balanced attack leads Indiana past Minnesota
Xavier Johnson led five Indiana players in double-figures with 14 points as IU downed Minnesota 73-60 Sunday at Assembly Hall. The Hoosiers outscored the Golden Gophers 25-11 down the stretch, including holding Minnesota without a field goal over the final three minutes. IU shot 48.2% from the field and 37.2% from the 3-point line (9-24) while limiting the Gophers to 38.3% from the field as well as 20.0% from beyond the arc.
Johnson was joined in double-figures by backcourt mate Parker Stewart and reserve Rob Phineese as they combined for 39 points — with 24 coming on eight 3-pointers — 9 assists and 9 rebounds. Trayce Jackson-Davis (13 points, 12 rebounds) and RaceThompson (10 points) also scored in double-figures for the Hoosiers (12-3, 3-2).
"“I call it wining basketball,” IU head coach Mike Woodson said. “(Minnesota) came back from being down and took the lead. Our defense picked up after that. We had the lapse and picked it up. “The last three to four minutes we were solid.”"
Minnesota (10-3, 1-3) was led by their three top-scorers on the season. Jamison Battle led the way with 19 points while Payton Willis added 18 and EJ Stephens had 12.
Indiana Tidbits
- Indiana leads the all-time series against Minnesota 99-67, which includes going 63-19 at home.
- The Hoosiers are 11-0 at home, their best mark since 2015-16.
- Indiana has won two straight and five of six. They have already matched last season’s win total.

- Minnesota’s loss on Sunday was their first away from Williams Arena, falling to 3-1 in true road games and 5-1 away from home.
- This year, the Golden Gophers have used the same starting lineup in every game, consisting of Eric Curry, Battle, Stephens, Willis, and Luke Loewe.
- Battle has scored in double-figures 28 times since the beginning of last year.
- Willis has scored in double-figures 10 times.
- Loewe, a transfer from William & Mary, went 0-for-8 from the field and finished with 0 points against IU and is now shooting a career-low 36% from the field.
- Minnesota trailed 39-29 at the half, marking just the fifth time all season that the Gophers have trailed at the midway point. They are 3-2 in those games.
- The Gophers rank in the top 10 nationally in turnovers with 9.2. UM has a +2.2 turnover margin.
