Atlantic 10 Basketball power rankings: UMass tumbles while Dayton soars up
4. VCU Rams – 10-6 (3-2)
Things started out as well as possible for the Rams in A-10 play, running out to a 3-0 record after beating both Dayton and La Salle on the road, along with a dominant home win over George Washington. However, they weren’t able to get wins in the past week, falling to both St. Bonaventure in blowout fashion, before falling to Davidson in a last-second shortcoming.
While VCU was able to limit the Wildcats to just 63 points overall, they only had 61. Vince Williams led them with 16 points, while both KeShawn Curry and Ace Baldwin had 10 points, seven assists, and five steals. After missing most of the non-conference, the sophomore point guard has given VCU a massive boost offensively, now averaging 10.3 ppg and 5.4 apg through eight games.
The Rams are once again among the elite defensive team in the country but not that good offensively. The inconsistencies with this team when it comes to scoring will put many A-10 games within range of being wins and losses but the continued development of the underclassmen will be key going forward.
VCU’s next opponents include Saint Joe’s, as well as Richmond and Davidson. These are arguably the three best offensive units in Atlantic 10 Basketball so it’ll be a good contrast of styles. The Rams will need their own scoring punch to show up if they’re going to win the games.
