Atlantic 10 Basketball power rankings: UMass tumbles while Dayton soars up
3. St. Bonaventure Bonnies – 10-4 (2-1)
In the first three games of league play, we’ve seen the “good”, “bad”, and the “ugly” from the Bonnies. They needed overtime to get past La Salle after a covid pause, led by 18 points and eight assists from Kyle Lofton and 15 points, 15 rebounds, and four blocks from Osun Osunniyi.
Things were much easier back at home against VCU, with St. Bonaventure getting a 73-53 victory in an impressive performance on both ends. But as has been the problem all season, the Bonnies inconsistency and lackluster starts came back to haunt them against Dayton.
The final score was a 68-50 defeat, with only Jalen Adaway (15 points) scoring in double figures for the team. With little depth as they have, St. Bonaventure needs production from all five starters to win games. It also speaks to a larger issue in that relying on five guys to win will be problematic against a condensed schedule due to games being rescheduled in the next 45 days. If this team gets tired and falls behind, they struggle to get back into the game.
The hope for the Bonnies is that they start to look like the version that dominated VCU and will get the chance to get back into the win column on the road at Duquesne and George Mason in the next week.
