Horizon League Basketball: 3 takeaways from Wright State’s win over Oakland
By Ryan Kay
Wright State came back from double-digits in the second half to win
The Golden Grizzlies did a better job of guarding the perimeter in the second half, limiting the Raiders’ ability to make three-pointers, however, they did not find a way to stop Wright State’s big man Basile in the second half. Oakland also continued to shoot well behind the arc but also attacked the basket more in the second half but struggles on offense in the final four minutes of the game.
When Wright State cut the Golden Grizzlies lead to seven, Moore made a step-back three to give Oakland a double-digit lead again but the Raiders kept fighting back. On the next offensive possession, Cain made a three-pointer to give the Golden Grizzlies an 11 point lead with just over six minutes remaining in the game and it seemed that Oakland was going to win the game.
Wright State then went on a run to tie the game at 69 points apiece with just over four minutes remaining in the second half and Parrish made a timely three to give the Golden Grizzlies a 72-69 lead which appeared that Oakland was about to go on a much-needed run. However, Wright State’s defense played very well in the final minutes of the game.
After a Wright State made three-pointer, Oakland’s Lampman made two free throws to tie the game at 74 points apiece. The Golden Grizzlies got a steal on the next possession and Cain took a charge on the next defensive possession. After a failed dunk attempt by Cain, Wight State’s Basile got the rebound off of a missed basket and got the put-back to give the Raiders a two-point lead with 5.8 seconds remaining in the game.
Then Holden got a steal and put down a two-handed dunk to give Wright State the 78-74 victory. The Raiders to their credit never gave up and kept on playing hard and determined and that is why they won this game.
