NCAA Basketball top 25 power rankings: Texas Tech rises, Baylor and Providence fall
By Joey Loose
23. Marquette (17-9)
This season has seen the rise and fall and rise again of Marquette basketball, though we seem to be in another downturn in recent weeks. The Golden Eagles lost three of their four games the last two weeks, dropping them all on the road, including a really rough performance against Butler. However, they showed back in January why this team is highly competitive in the Big East and there are still a few weeks to turn things around before the postseason.
This week they only had one chance to get back on track, and they certainly took that opportunity. It wasn’t the toughest matchup, but they did secure a 77-66 home win over Georgetown back on Wednesday. The team played fine, with Kam Jones’s 19 points leading the way in a solid victory; Tyler Kolek also had 11 assists to lead the team. Georgetown is really bad so anything other than a win would’ve been a disaster for Marquette.
The Golden Eagles have already swept Villanova and have some nice wins on the season, but it’s all about how they’re playing right now. Their seven-game winning streak back in January was a rampage through the Big East, beginning with a beat down of a great Providence squad, but it won’t mean anything if they slip up in March. A Sunday road trip to Creighton represents a great chance to prove that this team can win games away from home again.
