20. Houston Cougars

The Cougars played in one of the most thrilling games of the season last Sunday against Wichita State on the road, going into double-overtime. But despite shooting 39% from the field overall, Houston was able to win 76-74, led by 23 points and 11 rebounds from Josh Carlton. Jamal Shead was close to a triple-double and guard Kyler Edwards had a double-double.

Wednesday’s matchup against Tulane on the road became interesting thanks to the Waves’ recent surge. And for the most part, the game was within range. However, 21 points from Kyler Edwards and 18 points and nine rebounds from Taze Moore helped Houston win 81-67.

Houston needs to continue winning to maintain a strong seed, because losses could drop them down towards the 8-9 range. Important games up against SMU and Memphis rounds out this four-game week for them, with the chance to win the AAC regular-season title.

19. Illinois Fighting Illini

The Illini had just one game this week but it was a big one, at home against Ohio State in a battle of ranked teams. It was a high-scoring affair, with both squads scoring over 80 points in the game. Unfortunately for Illinois, they lost, 86-83, despite Alfonso Plummer going for 26 points on 8/10 from three-point range. While the offense was strong, it was the perimeter defense that let them down, making it three losses in the past five games.

Illinois’ next opponent is on the road against Michigan, who desperately needs the win for their resume. Penn State and Iowa round out the regular season before the Big Ten Tournament, giving them time to get back into a groove.
