Michigan

Last year’s Big Ten regular-season champions have not been the same this season, and the recent suspension of coach Juwan Howard has certainly put a damper on the end of the season. However, these Wolverines have actually played some good basketball down the stretch. They got a big 17-point win over Michigan State on Tuesday and secured a road win over Ohio State on Sunday, sandwiching a tough loss against Iowa.

That 11-9 record in the Big Ten looks good and the analytics have Michigan looking like an NCAA Tournament team. This road win over Ohio State to end the week certainly gives them a push in the right direction. This is a resume that already included wins over Purdue, Indiana, and Iowa before this week and only got better with those two nice wins. The Wolverines might still need a strong performance in the Big Ten Tournament, but these Wolverines should dance.

Rutgers

The early January rampage was impressive for Rutgers, with four straight wins over ranked teams. The Scarlet Knights came back down to the earth a bit, but are back with a vengeance. On Wednesday, they got an important road win at Indiana, and they finished the regular season by hanging on to beat Penn State. Rutgers sits 12-8 in Big Ten play, having completed a very successful season and putting themselves in great shape.

Rutgers did not have a good non-conference season, stained by losses to Lafayette and Massachusetts, but they’ve really made up for it with these Big Ten wins. They’ve beaten nearly every solid team in the Big Ten at least once, with wins over Purdue, Michigan, and Iowa early in the conference slate. The Scarlet Knights have taken care of their business and won a lot of key games to improve their resume and standing; how could you keep this team out of the Big Dance?
