NCAA Basketball: Tennessee rises up, Texas Tech falls in latest top 25 power rankings
18. Texas Tech Red Raiders
In what should’ve been an easy week turned out very difficult for Texas Tech. They squeaked by Kansas State at home by just five points before falling on the road at last-place Oklahoma State in the final seconds, 52-51. Kevin Obanor had 16 points and 10 rebounds but the team shot just 35% from the field overall.
The Red Raiders are still squarely the 3 seed in the upcoming Big 12 Tournament but losing to the Cowboys hurt their chances at a 2 or even a 3 seed in the Big Dance. They’ll have to beat Kansas in the semifinals (if they both get there) to make up for Saturday’s letdown from a seeding standpoint.
17. Murray State Racers
The Racers became not only the first team to win 30 total wins this season, but also the first to get an automatic bid to the NCAA Tournament by winning the Ohio Valley Conference postseason event. They defeated Southeast Missouri State and Morehead State to get the title, led by 23 points from Tevin Brown and 21 from Justice Hill.
By winning the OVC Tournament, there won’t be any bid thieves coming from that conference. But this Murray State team may be even better than the one Ja Morant was one a couple of years back, which should be a scary proposition for the rest of the field.
16. Providence Friars
Providence had just one game last week and thanks to the previous win over Butler days prior, they had locked up the Big East Regular-Season title and the No. 1 seed in the conference tournament before facing Villanova. But it was the Wildcats that got the bragging rights on the court, giving the Friars a 76-74 defeat.
Jared Bynum had 19 points and 10 assists to lead the team, while both Noah Horchler and A.J. Reeves each had 15. The team will look to lick its wounds in the Big East Tournament, where they’ll be a 1 seed yet a betting underdog to Villanova. The Friar players could get a third shot at them and would like to avenge the two earlier losses before heading to the NCAA Tournament.
