By Tyler Cronin
All-Defensive Team
Osun Osunniyi, St. Bonaventure – 28 votes
Jacob Gilyard, Richmond – 26
Vince Williams Jr, VCU – 16
DaRon Holmes II, Dayton – 12
Makhel Mitchell, URI – 11
Honorable Mention: Ace Baldwin, VCU (9); Yuri Collins, SLU (8); Hason Ward, VCU (8); Clifton Moore, La Salle (7); Chuba Ohams, Fordham (6); Kyle Lofton, St. Bonaventure (6); Fred Thatch Jr, SLU (3); Davonte Gaines, George Mason (1); Francis Okoro, SLU (1); Grant Huffman, Davidson (1); Antrell Charlton, Fordham (1); Malachi Smith, Dayton (1)
As the nation’s #2 shot blocking conference, the A-10 is teeming with fantastic defensive centers, hence the inclusion of three of them. The most surprising omission though, was VCU’s Ace Baldwin, who nudged out the NCAA’s All-Time steals leader, Jacob Gilyard, for the A-10 lead in swipes during conference play.
All-Rookie Team
DaRon Holmes II, Dayton – 29 votes *Unanimous
Malachi Smith, Dayton – 29 *Unanimous
Erik Reynolds II, St. Joe’s – 22
Primo Spears, Duquesne – 15
Jayden Nunn, VCU – 15
Honorable Mention: Brayon Freeman, GW (13); Jordan Nesbitt, SLU (10); Khalil Brantley, La Salle (4); Jackie Johnson II, Duquesne (3); Ahmad Harrison, Fordham (1); Quadry Adams, St. Bonaventure (1)
The only two unanimous selections for any award, Holmes and Smith were consistently the two best players for 2nd place Dayton and it’s their growth throughout the season that has made the Flyers the betting favorite for the A-10 Tournament.
