NCAA Basketball: Ranking all 68 head coaches in 2022 NCAA Tournament
By Joey Loose
28. Bob McKillop (Davidson)
9 NCAA Tournaments (3-9)
Since 1989, Davidson basketball has been led by McKillop and he’s done an enviable job making this program into what it is today. Clearly, the highlight of his career is recruiting Stephen Curry and leading that 2008 Wildcats team to the Elite Eight. Now he’s back in the NCAA Tournament for the first time in four seasons and hoping to make some more damage with a talented team.
27. Dan Hurley (Connecticut)
3 NCAA Tournaments (2-3)
It’s been an impressive rise for Hurley, who engineered a 12-win turnaround at Wagner before all kinds of success in the A-10 at Rhode Island. After a pair of Tourney bids with the Rams, Hurley took the task of rebuilding these Huskies in 2018 and now has them back in the NCAA Tournament for the second straight year. Hurley has Connecticut in great shape now in their second year back in the Big East and is looking and hoping for his first run beyond the opening weekend of the Tournament.
26. Ed Cooley (Providence)
5 NCAA Tournaments (1-5)
A longtime former assistant at Boston College, Cooley has been making waves at Providence since taking the job back in 2011, but this might be his best effort to date. Cooley turned around things as head coach at Fairfield, then led the Friars to five straight NCAA Tournament bids. After a few less successful seasons, he led Providence to the Big East regular-season title this season and has a dynamic and potent roster, hoping to finally break through with some postseason success.
25. Randy Bennett (Saint Mary’s)
7 NCAA Tournaments (4-7)
A former aide at San Diego, Pepperdine, and Saint Louis, Bennett has been head coach at Saint Mary’s since 2001 and the results have spoken for themselves. Despite always being second fiddle to Gonzaga, he’s managed to win more than 70% of all games with the Gaels. This will be the eighth NCAA Tournament for him, hoping to replicate some of the success from a Sweet Sixteen run way back in 2010.
