NCAA Basketball: 8 teams that should target Colgate transfer Nelly Cummings
Rutgers Scarlet Knights
The Scarlet Knights knew they would be without senior point guard Geo Baker for next year but freshman guard Jaden Jones entering the NBA Draft early came as a complete shock and leaves them without a proven ball-handler. They’re another regional option that needs a point guard for Cummings to consider and he’d get plenty of playing time as well.
Rutgers will have lost almost all of its golden core that led them to the NCAA Tournament, leaving center Cliff Omoruyi and Paul Mulcahy as the only confirmed starters. Although Mulcahy quietly led the team with 5.3 apg this year, you’d prefer another ball-handler to pace the offense and bring the ball up the court. Cummings would be great to pair with the other veteran guard and he could have his own role scoring-wise in the offense.
Syracuse Orange
Cummings is also very familiar with local foe Syracuse, leading Colgate with 18 points and seven assists in the team’s 100-85 win in the Carrier Dome this season. If the transfer doesn’t want to move far away, he could play for Hall of Famer Jim Boeheim, who will be without both of his sons (Jimmy and Buddy) going forward.
Joe Girard will be around and he is the starting point guard but he may be best moving off-ball on offense. Adding Cummings can take the ball out of his hands and he’s the kind of experienced newcomer that can pick up the Syracuse zone system without much of a transition process. His smaller size would be a slight concern but this is a team that is coming off a losing season and needs as much talent as possible.
