NCAA Tournament 2022: Players to watch in Friday’s Sweet 16 matchups
Isaiah Wong, 6-foot-3 guard, Miami Hurricanes
It’s no surprise veteran head coach Jim Larranaga has his Miami Hurricanes playing well and in the midst of the Sweet 16 of the NCAA Tournament. His pedigree on the sideline has been an energizer to the game of 6-foot-3 junior guard Isaiah Wong.
Fearless is the best way to describe how Wong plays the game, especially around the rim. His dunk on top draft pick Jabari Smith Jr. was just one of his many buckets against the Tigers in their upset bid as he finished with 21 points along with six rebounds.
Wong has exploded for 21.5 ppg, 5.0 rpg, 1.5 apg, and 1.0 spg while shooting 50 percent from the field as a threat around the paint and rim area. He’s been impressive getting to his spots inside the 3-point line and showing that there’s still value in scoring in the paint and mid-range area.
While the Cyclones will look to force him to beat them with his perimeter shooting, he’s not necessarily incapable, either. He shot 30.4 percent from 3-point range during the regular season. In a matchup that’s anybody’s to win, look for Wong to have another big game to lead the way for the Hurricanes as their fearless leader.
