NCAA Basketball: Way-too-early top 25 power rankings for 2022-23 season
2021-22 season record: 19-14 (11-9)
This is an interesting roster because they’re losing senior guards Eli Brooks and Devante Jones and could also lose all three key frontcourt pieces in Hunter Dickinson, Caleb Houstan, and Moussa Diabate. Of the three, Houstan is more likely to leave and I’ll assume him back. Dickinson, who averaged 18.6 ppg and 8.6 rpg this past season, isn’t on any mock boards so he very well can be back for a junior season.
The Wolverines had the No. 1 recruiting class last offseason but that group wasn’t ready to contribute big minutes. But if guys like Frankie Collins and Kobe Bufkin can have sophomore breakout campaigns, that would solve the backcourt issues on paper. And this team does have another top-10 class coming in, led by four-wing Jett Howard and top-40 big man Tarris Reed.
This is definitely going to be a team that looks to add more veterans from the portal but the opportunity is there for the underclassmen to take large roles in the offense. Having a security blanket such as Dickinson automatically gives this team a high floor but the ceiling will be determined by who the second or third-best players are. If it’s Diabate and Collins, they’ll be right back in Big Ten title contention.
