NCAA Basketball: 10 teams that should target Morehead State transfer Johni Broome
Auburn Tigers
Broome’s first game of this season came against Auburn, where he went for 12 points and eight rebounds in a loss. But those aren’t bad numbers going up against the nation’s shot-blocker leader in Walker Kessler. He’s set to go pro this offseason, as well as freshman star forward Jabari Smith.
Auburn already has Smith’s replacement at the power forward spot but they don’t have Kessler’s replacement just yet. Going from the leader in blocked shots to the No. 2 guy would be perfect and if Broome wants to stay in SEC country, the Tigers would offer him a starring role and a roster that would be built for another potential run in March.
Gonzaga Bulldogs
The Bulldogs have All-American center Drew Timme on the roster but he’s currently a 50/50 decision on whether to come back or go pro. If he’s gone, expect them to make a major run at Broome, who would be a perfect replacement. Also, the WCC isn’t a major jump from the Ohio Valley so the competition certainly wouldn’t be an issue for the Morehead State forward.
But even if Timme would return, Broome would present an opportunity for Gonzaga to have a more physical frontcourt. As great a player as Timme is offensively, he’s struggled defensively in the NCAA Tournament against bigger centers. Playing him at the four would take that issue away and Broome can hold his own there. Of course, there may be some issues offensively that could make this less than a perfect match.
