Which players are Pittsburgh Basketball looking at?

Like any team that has 5+ spots to fill, the Panthers are going to be linked with dozens of transfers in the portal. Of course, not all will be fully interested in the program. Here’s a look at players that Pittsburgh genuinely has a chance in the portal.

Guards

Jomaru Brown – Eastern Kentucky (1 year left of eligibility)

2021-22 stats: 12.2 ppg, 1.6 apg on 38% shooting, 31% from deep

The 6’2 shooting guard averaged over 18 ppg two years ago but saw his production dip as he came off the bench this past season. But his scoring ability still is at a high level and would be a great bench option for Pittsburgh.

Brayon Freeman – George Washington (3 years left)

2021-22 stats: 10.3 ppg, 3.7 apg on 43% shooting, 44% from deep

The All-Atlantic 10 freshman guard was a bright spot on the Colonials, scoring in double figures in the final seven games of the season and was averaging around 15 ppg during that stretch. The 6’2 combo guard also had three games of at least eight assists and can be a ball-handler of an offense.

Marcus Hammond – Niagara Purple Eagles (1 year left)

2021-22 stats: 18.1 ppg, 4.7 rpg on 43% shooting, 37% from deep

The 3-time All-MAAC guard led the team in scoring this past season and scoring 8+ points in every single game, including a season-high 28 points in multiple games. The Queens, New York native adds a toughness element and ability to create his own shot and is capable of starting or being a 6th man.

Wings

Jason Roche – The Citadel Bulldogs (3 years left)

2021-22 stats: 13.2 ppg, 4.0 apg on 40% shooting, 40% from deep, and 91% from the FT line

The 6’5 forward showed Pittsburgh up close that he’s capable of playing at a high level, scoring 27 points in the season-opening upset. He also had 29 points against Samford, going 9/15 from deep. He’s one of the best three-point shooters available and has been in constant contact with the program as of late.

Phillip Alston – Cal U (2 years left)

2021-22 stats: 21.0 ppg and 10.8 rpg

The 6’6 D-II star is a local target that has over 50 D-I offers, including Pittsburgh. His skillset compares to Chris Payton but Alston is much more comfortable playing on the perimeter and should be able to make the transition better. Going from D-II to D-I can be a risk but the Panthers can afford to try and Alston could be an impact piece.

Frontcourt

Neal Quinn – Lafayette Leopards (1-2 years left)

2021-22 stats: 14.7 ppg, 7.4 rpg, 4.0 apg

The skilled 7’0 center became an offensive impact player this past season, showcasing an all-around skillset that should translate over to the ACC level. He would likely slide Hugley over to the four-spot but that would be a frontcourt that would compare well with the rest of the league. And Quinn’s passing ability will help take pressure off the guards also.

Mo Njie – Eastern Michigan Eagles (3 years left)

2021-22 stats: 6.6 ppg, 5.3 rpg, 1.1 bpg

The 6’10 big man is a solid defensive presence that would give Pittsburgh needed depth in the frontcourt. He’s mobile enough to play both positions if need be and has plenty of time to develop a better offensive game.

Jorge Diaz-Graham and Guillermo Diaz-Graham (4 years left)

Pittsburgh doesn’t have any class of 2022 commits and Coach Capel has been transparent about the team’s desire to prefer transfers that can provide an immediate impact. However, adding this pair of freshmen forwards would provide needed depth and both twins can shoot the ball and spread the floor. If the Panthers can land these guys that would solve a number of problems on the roster.
