3. Coach Jon Scheyer looking for the No. 1 recruiting class in 2023

It was a painful Final Four loss to rival North Carolina that officially ended Coach K’s NCAA Basketball career at Duke that also signaled the beginning of the Jon Scheyer era. And he’s got a really good roster to work with, even after all of the projected departures of the current team (Paolo Banchero, Mark Williams, Wendell Moore, Trevor Keel, AJ Griffin) officially enters the NBA Draft.

The Blue Devils have the current No. 1 recruiting class for 2022, led by a trio of top-5 overall prospects (Dariq Whitehead, Dereck Lively, and Kyle Filipowski). But Coach Scheyer’s first true class in 2023 is also setting up to be No. 1 as well, thanks to a pair of five-star commitments in the past week.

The first came with Tyrese Proctor, a 6’4 combo guard from Australia that can easily play on and off the ball. He’s a quality shooter and playmaker and could be the eventual replacement for Jeremy Roach at the point guard position.

Mackenzie Mgbako is an elite two-way performer and a 6’8 wing that is built for the modern NBA game. There’s a case to be made that he’ll be the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2023 class, as he has few weaknesses in his game and could easily be the star of the 2023-24 roster in due time.

With five-star guards Caleb Foster and Jared McClain already on board, Duke’s backcourt is set for the next couple of years. And 247sportsComposite also has forward Sean Stewart in the top-30 overall as well. There’s a good chance that this past week locked up the Blue Devils as the top class in 2023, an awesome start for new head coach Scheyer.
