NCAA Basketball: Early breakout stars to watch for 2022-23 season
By Shea Irish
Camryn Weston
Playing in all 37 games for a Middle Tennessee team that advanced to the College Basketball Invitational Championship, Weston averaged 8.8 PPG on solid shooting numbers of 51.8 FG% and 80.8 FT%. The Albany, GA product also chipped in 3.7 RPG, 1.2 SPG, and led the Blue Raiders in assists for the season.
The 6’3” sophomore guard seemed to show up when the lights were brightest in 2021-22. In the only game Middle Tennessee played against a power conference school, he had nine points and eight rebounds in just 18 minutes of action vs Ole Miss. Arguably his best game of the year came when the Blue Raiders needed a victory over Western Kentucky to clinch the East Division of Conference USA.
Flirting with a triple-double, he finished the game with seven points, 10 rebounds,10 assists, and not a single turnover. He then recorded 17 points, 9 rebounds, and 4 assists in a 3-OT game against UAB during the C-USA Tournament Semifinals.
According to Verbal Commits, the Blue Raiders guard was just a 2-star recruit coming out of Southeastern Community College and only had one other Division 1 offer from Presbyterian. Talk about a hidden gem in Murfreesboro, TN.
Looking forward to the 2022-23 season, Middle Tennessee loses its top two scorers, so Weston’s playing time should increase significantly. It wouldn’t shock me to see him double his scoring average and continue to impact the game at an even higher level on both ends of the floor.
