Big Ten Basketball: Illinois roster losses, Penn State commits among offseason updates
Sessoms out, Wynter and Funk in
Since Apr. 14, 2022, Penn State Basketball has been reshaping itself through the transfer portal, through addition and subtraction. After splitting his first four years between Binghamton and Penn State, the Nittany Lions’ third-leading scorer has committed to transfer to Coppin State for the 2022-23 season.
Sessoms started just 10 games and averaged slightly over 27 minutes per game. The 6’0 point guard was highly effective in using his ball-handling to beat his defender on the perimeter and finish in the paint, which is evident by his 46 percent shooting from two-point territory.
The beautiful duplicity of the transfer portal may have taken a fourth-year senior point guard from the Nittany Lions, but it also gave one. Camren Wynter is a 6’2 point guard who averaged almost 16 points while starting for Drexel. Wynter has penetration ability, which might be subdued in the Big Ten due to his 28 percent from beyond the arc.
In case you missed it, the Nittany Lions will also be adding Bucknell starting off-guard Andrew Funk to their rotation. The 6’5 guard averaged over 17 points while making the All-Patriot League Second Team. Funk will provide outside shooting that will be required to extend opposing Big Ten defenses as he averages 36 percent from beyond the arc. That 36 percent over the 2021-22 season included two games when he connected on six three-pointers and two games when he connected on seven shots from deep.
With leading scorer, Jalen Pickett returning for his COVID-19 year of eligibility as well as Myles Dread, Head Coach Micah Shrewsberry will have options to choose how creative he will be with a three-man backcourt.
