9. 2009-2010

Record: 25-8 (13-5 in Big East) – Round of 32

While the 2020-2021 season may have been one of the best coaching jobs by Wright, the 2009-2010 season could have been one of the worst during his time at Villanova. This team was loaded with talent and started the year in the top five and ended up starting out 20-1 and crawled to number 2 in the country. The Wildcats were one of the best shooting teams in the country and had a top-five offense in the country. As we all know it is not about how you start but about how you finish.

The finish here is what is really going to upset the Villanova fans the most when they look back on this season.  The Wildcats lost 7 out of their last 12 and stumbled into the NCAA tournament. They were a two-seed and with the amount of talent they had it seemed they would be able to get to at least the elite eight. After beating Robert Morris by three in the opening round, Scottie Reynolds and company lost to Saint Mary’s in the Round of 32. It was a disappointing end to what many thought was a title team.

This team comes in just ahead of the 2020-2021 team because of the overall talent and expectations all year with this team. They finished the year 25-8, ranked in the top 10 overall, and had they not faltered late in the year this team could have won a title. The 2020-2021 team didn’t have the depth to win a title even if Gillespie didn’t get hurt.
