9. 2009-2010

Record: 25-8

Big East Record: 13-5

Big East Tournament Champion: No

NCAA Tournament finish: Second Round (L) vs Saint Mary’s

Highest Ranking: #2

Top scorer: Scottie Reynolds 18.2 ppg

The season before, which we will get to, Villanova was so close to finally accomplishing their goals. In this day in age since there is a lot of moving parts to teams year-to-year, if a team were to return 63% of the minutes from the previous year combined with the fact there are seven High School Parade All-Americans on the team; a championship should be in order the following season.

2009-10 was year filled with high expectations.

This Wildcats team endured a hot start (20-1) all the way until February. Then going 4-5 the rest of the regular season started to deflate championship hopes. Following the cold finish then followed the first-round exit in the Big East tournament to Marquette. Eventually, a second-round exit to a mid-major Saint Mary’s team dampened what could have been for this talented Wildcats team.

In hindsight this was a great ‘Nova team due to their offensive prowess. Finishing 4th (81.8 ppg) in the nation in scoring was really the emergence of how Wright’s teams would operate in the future. The superb scoring from the trio of guards, Scottie Reynolds, Corey Fisher, and Corey Stokes really set the tone. From the perspective of watching a free-flowing offense with talented perimeter play, this team crawled so other ‘Nova teams would fly.
