NCAA Basketball: Updated WTE 2022-23 power rankings after transfer deadline
9. Kansas Jayhawks
2021-22 record: 34-6 (14-4 in Big 12)
The national champion Jayhawks got what they needed from ASU transfer Remy Martin at the right time in the NCAA Tournament to win it all a month ago. But he’s now gone, leaving the team without an elite point guard to lead them for next season. Martin isn’t the only key piece gone, as starting big man David McCormack has gone pro, along with Big 12 Player of the Year and All-American Ochai Agbaji.
There are two other starters going through the draft process in Christian Braun and Jalen Wilson. It’s more likely that Braun departs than Wilson but the team will have plenty of depth to work with in the underclassmen core filled with top-50 prospects.
Returning forwards Zach Clemence and KJ Adams are set to get more playing time next season, joined by frontcourt recruits, Ernest Udeh and Zuby Ejiofor. The key newcomers to watch are five-star wings, MJ Rice, and National High School Player of the Year Gradey Dick, who can come in for Braun on the wings.
The concern remains in the backcourt, as Dajaun Harris and Drake transfer Joseph Yesufu doesn’t give the team a high enough ceiling. But current transfer target and former Iowa State point guard Tyrese Hunter does and if he joins them, could vault up to the top-5 for the next set of rankings.
