North Carolina Tar Heels

The comparisons between the North Carolina Tar Heels of this season and UCLA Bruins of last season are aplenty. Like UCLA, North Carolina can shore up its depth with a big transfer, a la Myles Johnson.

North Carolina has so many pieces returning from its second-place team, it feels almost certain the team will start the year as a title favorite. Hubert Davis’ squad could use more shooting, though, considering Brady Manek was the only regular to hit more than 40 percent of his threes last season.

Former four-star recruit Kerwin Walton recently entered the transfer portal, taking away another three-point weapon (35.4 percent last year). Smith would help the team’s shooting, even if minutes are tough to distribute in a crowded backcourt.

Michigan Wolverines

Michigan was largely disappointing last season but still proved its mettle during the NCAA Tournament. Juwan Howard’s team looks prepared to reload again next season and would welcome another veteran presence.

Depending on how draft testing shakes out, Michigan’s roster looks good next year. Princeton transfer Jaelin Llewellyn will hold down the point guard position, while Kobe Bufkin and Jett Howard will compete for minutes at shooting guard.

Both of those players would likely be good fits, but Smith would go a long ways toward improving the top-end talent of the guard rotation. Luckily for the program, a spot just opened up for Smith to fill after Frankie Collins entered the transfer portal over the weekend.
