NCAA Basketball: Ranking the 8 team finalists for 2023 5-star guard Ja’Kobe Walter
By Ian Mumm
Oklahoma Sooners
The Oklahoma program has not witnessed a freshman guard make an overarching impact on the team’s results since 2017-18 when Trae Young graced the Norman campus. In fact, the backcourt rotations since then have very much been in flux and in need of top-tier talent. There’s no better option to help revitalize the Sooners than the top guard playing for Oklahoma-based Adidas grassroots organization Team Trae Young.
The Sooners are already losing significant guard depth on next year’s roster and will be looking at a youthful group of CJ Noland, Bijan Cortes, Joe Bamisile (George Washington), and incoming 4-star guards Milos Uzan and Otega Oweh to elevate the backcourt.
Adding in Walter the following year provides head coach Porter Moser with a sure-fire shot creator and a talent capable of elevating the rest of the roster. Walter’s skillset also enables Coach Moser to tighten the screws on both ends of the floor and utilize a talented group of guards to make the NCAA Tournament.
