1. Chet Holmgren – Gonzaga Bulldogs

With the first overall pick, the Orlando Magic should and probably will select [unicorn big] Chet Holmgren. Holmgren is his own mystery in his own right. A lot of people have questions and concerns mainly about his skinny stature. It’s a nasty agenda/narrative being pushed by the casual fan. No, I honestly don’t think he is the best player which contradicts the selection. However, you need players that offer a lot in different areas to push you over the top.

Holmgren is best placed at the 4 in lineups. His ability to operate from the high post/perimeter to pass or run sets through him is special. He’s not a go-to scorer on the offensive end like the four other options mentioned before. His area of expertise is to be a player that will impact the game due to IQ and special defensive skills.

The notion he won’t be able to guard inside due to physical centers in the league is rare because the post-game is almost extinct. It’s two types of centers in the game today: rim runners and stretch bigs. Offensively, Holmgren can be both as he has a soft touch and the roll ability to position himself well for lob opportunities.

Back to his defensive prowess, which might have to be the highest upside in the entire draft. Holmgren has perfect verticality going up which at his 7’0 size it’s not much for opponents to do any adjustment at that point. He’s also an exceptional rebounder, takes contact despite his slender frame, and lastly has perfect timing when blocking shots near or around the rim.

The Magic can use his versatility on both ends of the floor to complement the players they already have. Not to mention he played high school and grassroots ball with Suggs. I am impressed with his motor and confidence despite all the doubters. Not going to a super big market where the spotlight will be on him every day is a factor too.

Next. Paolo or Chet for No. 1 overall pick?. dark

Flip the coin you get a marketable player that can instill some toughness. Holmgren is a polarizing rare player that the Magic might just have to take the first chance on.
