Duke Basketball: 3 takeaways after Trevor Keels departs for NBA Draft

Where Duke currently stands
It’s an unlikely scenario, but let’s just take a step back and say that Duke is done adding talent to their roster. There’s already a very impressive group of young players coming to Durham next season and this team is certainly in shape to make another run at postseason glory. Some may perceive that the youth or lack of outside scoring could be an issue, but maybe that’s not a weakness at all.
The biggest question mark about the Blue Devils is how this program transitions with Jon Scheyer taking over as head coach. After more than four decades of Coach K, there’s a new man calling the shots. Scheyer has already shown his worth in recent years on the recruiting trail, but it’s a whole different animal when you’re the one calling the shots.
There will be differing perspectives on the Blue Devils, but this is a team that will likely start the year in the Top 10 and has the talent to stay there most of the season. At this point, we just don’t know how these young studs are going to play and how they’ll play together, but it’s easy to see the talent on this roster. If everything comes together, and the roster is remarkably different after all, that talent could make another Final Four run happen in Durham.
However, the floor for this team is a bit of an unknown. We really don’t know what to expect with Scheyer as head coach, nor how some of these new faces will feature in this rotation. In its current place, depth at guard is a bit of a struggle and might affect the team down the stretch. Expect the Blue Devils in the NCAA Tournament next season, though perhaps playing second fiddle to North Carolina. If they add Ramey or Grandison or some other talented guard, then you might be looking at another ACC champion.
