NCAA Basketball Recruiting: Analyzing 5 teams in play for top-100 G Carlton Carrington

Pittsburgh Panthers

The Panthers have landed several transfers this offseason in its rebuilt backcourt and currently, only one of them (Cashius McNeilly) has any eligibility after the next season. So from a playing time perspective, this option offers a ton for Carrington and he can play in the ACC. He’d also join another top-100 prospect in wing commit Marlon Barnes.

The big question with Pittsburgh is whether or not head coach Jeff Capel will be around for much longer. He’s certainly on the hot seat after a few underwhelming seasons and if things don’t improve could be on the outs. But where the Panthers benefit is that two of the five options are on the hot seat (Capel and Jarod Haase), two are candidates to move up (Kim English and Valentine) and who knows how long Pitino will be at Iona. So if the coaching situations aren’t important in this recruiting battle, Pitt could be in good shape here.

Stanford Cardinal

The academic aspect of the Cardinal is well-known and if that plays an important part, could get Carrington to go across the country to the Pac-12. As mentioned before, Coach Haase isn’t in great shape either but with the return of star wing Harrison Ingram, the team should be better next season.

He’ll be gone, as will Davidson transfer and starting shooting guard for 2023, Michael Jones. It’s an ideal situation for Carrington, who could come in and have a big impact early on, in a backcourt that would have to rely on him to score as well.

In a way, George Mason having Fernandez could complicate matters for them to get the local target. But with the two high-major programs coming off rough seasons, the three mid-majors could have a better than expected chance to land Carlton Carrington. Tune in next week to find out where he ends up.
