Big East Basketball: Updated WTE power rankings for 2022-23 season

7. St. John’s
In recent seasons, things have been a little better at St. John’s, a program that seems to break through and make the Big Dance every few years and really struggle in between those trips. The last three years under Mike Anderson have been decent steps; they’ve been above .500 all three years at the very least. However, there’s certainly optimism that this program takes that step forward again this year.
This lineup returns junior guards Posh Alexander (13.8 ppg, 5.5 apg) and Dylan Addae-Wusu (8.5 ppg, 3.9 apg) and adds a few nice pieces into the mix. Former DePaul forward David Jones and former Illinois guard Andre Curbelo both head to St. John’s, hoping to help replace the loss of Julian Champagnie and his 19.2 points per game from this lineup. Forward Joel Soriano is also back and will have a bigger role in the frontcourt.
The loss of Champagnie is huge, but these additions in the backcourt provide excellent depth and strengthen this roster as a whole. There are certainly some question marks, especially in the frontcourt, but the players on this team should still be able to put up points and push the ball up and down the court as they did last season. There’s the potential that St. John’s could finish a few spots higher than this ranking, especially by the time the season starts, but we’re hesitant to see how all these pieces actually fit together.
