Andre Curbelo, 6’1 Point Guard, St. John’s Red Storm

Andre Curbelo returns closer to home with a move from the Illinois Fighting Illini to the St. John’s Red Storm as he looks to breathe life into the Big East darlings at the point guard spot. They’ve stolen upstart wing David Jones from DePaul already but Curbelo is the one who will run the show when it’s all said and done.

Curbelo joins the Red Storm coming off a rollercoaster season that saw him miss 10 games due to a neck injury but he still managed to appear in 19 games, four of them starts, in 2021-22. He averaged 7.5 ppg, 3.2 apg and 3.1 rpg off the bench, though he struggled a bit shooting the ball, shooting just 32.9 percent from the floor.

He’ll look to turn things around on all fronts while adjusting to his new threads. The Red Storm finished seventh in the Big East this past season, dropping four of their last six contests to close out the year. With Curbelo coming in, Posh Alexander will have more than enough help to turn the tide in 2022-23, though they’re losing two of their top three scorers from a season ago.

Curbelo will have to prove he can co-exist in the backcourt with Alexander and show he can defend if he hopes to be successful. The former 2020-21 Big Ten Sixth Man of the Year will hope full health and a school closer to home are the other remedies.
