Tristen Newton, 6’5 Guard/Wing, UConn Huskies

Tristen Newton finds himself in a nice spot heading to the UConn Huskies and head coach Dan Hurley in 2022-23 after starting out with the East Carolina Pirates. After a stint with the transfer portal, he’s landed in the Big East with a chance to put his abilities to the test.

Newton will join the Huskies after spending the past three seasons as a member of the East Carolina Pirates. He earned All-AAC honors in 2021-22 after racking up 17.7 ppg, 5.0 apg, 4.8 rpg and 1.4 spg while shooting 43.5 percent from the field and 33.3 percent from 3-point land.

He’s a 6-foot-5 do-it-all guard that can fill up the stat sheet in a variety of ways as a scorer and playmaker. His 5.0 apg in 2021-22 ranked second in the conference and he also led the conference in free throw percentage (87.9 percent), showing he knows how to create free opportunities at the line as well.

He’ll be an addition for a squad that adds three other names in the backcourt from the portal in Nahiem Alleyne (Virginia Tech), Joey Calcaterra (San Diego) and Hassan Diarra (Texas A&M) looking to make their splash in the Big East this upcoming season.
