1. Nick Mayo – Eastern Kentucky

Our final focus in Maine is on Mayo, who had a pretty successful basketball career of his own at the collegiate level. A 6’9 forward originally from the town of Oakland, Mayo found his way to Eastern Kentucky in 2015. He was recruited by Jeff Neubauer, and played under successors Dan McHale and A. W. Hamilton. Despite all those scheme changes, Mayo found a way to have a very successful career.

Mayo was a high-volume shooter and scorer across his entire career, already averaging 14.5 points per game as a freshman. He made 44% of his 3-pointers as a junior and was one of the conference’s best free throw shooters as well. He averaged 23.7 points and 8.7 rebounds per game his final season, including a 40-point performance against Chattanooga, just one of a myriad of high-scoring affairs for the Colonels.

Mayo was OVC Freshman of the Year and had the rare honor of being named All-OVC First Team in all four of his collegiate seasons. He was an extremely important piece at Eastern Kentucky, finishing his career among the program and conference leaders in a number of categories, including 5th in total points scored. After briefly playing in the NBA Summer League in 2019, he’s continued his basketball career overseas, most recently playing in Japan.
