Final Thoughts and Outlook

With the reigning regular season champions Providence undergoing some big roster changes and Villanova losing their head coach and back-to-back Player of the Year winner, the conference is more open this year than in years past. There is a window for the Huskies to swoop in and move up in the standings if everything goes their way.

While Creighton is likely going to be the team to beat in the conference, the aforementioned Friars and Wildcats are still going to be in the mix right at the top. Xavier and Seton Hall always seem to put together solid teams and will be competitive with their new head coaches. St. John’s added a few good transfers in David Jones and Andre Curbelo. After that, there is a slight drop-off, but all 10 teams are going to give the Huskies some trouble in one way or another. UConn could realistically finish anywhere from first to seventh in the conference this year.

The Huskies once again have one of the deepest rosters in the sport. A backcourt that lost Cole, Martin, and Gaffney brought in Newton, Alleyne, Calcaterra, and Diarra, along with an improved Hawkins and Jackson. The frontcourt after Sanogo is young and raw, but the potential is through the roof. Overall, this group has the potential to rise through the rankings and be a Top 10 team and Coach Hurley and the players believe that. They also may have struggles that are to be expected with eight new scholarship players and ten new players total to the program.

At the end of the day, the way this team is built is different from the way last years was built. If and when Coach Hurley gets everybody on the same page, even if it takes a couple of games to mesh. With an All-American in the frontcourt and the depth in the backcourt, the future is very bright.
