NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Rhode Island of last decade
By Joey Loose
8. T. J. Weeks – Massachusetts
This 6’4 guard from Warwick is only three years deep into his collegiate career and is still writing his legacy. Weeks played great at the high school level and was recruited by Matt McCall to UMass, spending these last three seasons playing for the Minutemen. A promising freshman season was cut short by injury, but Weeks has found a way to contribute in the years since.
Weeks played just ten games as a freshman, eventually being granted a redshirt, but averaged 14.7 points and hit over 48% of his 3-pointers. His numbers haven’t quite been as impressive in the two seasons since, but he’s still been an important piece for the Minutemen. Playing a full season last year, he averaged 9.6 points and 4.8 assists per game while knocking down just under 37% of those long-range shots.
McCall was fired and former South Carolina coach Frank Martin took over the Minutemen program this offseason. It’s expected that Weeks will play an even more important role moving forward under the program’s new leadership. What we’ve seen so far is that Weeks can shoot the ball and can become an efficient offensive weapon. We’ll just have to see how much of a step forward he can take at UMass in the coming years.
