NCAA Basketball: 10 best players from state of Wisconsin of last decade
By Joey Loose
9. Kevon Looney – UCLA
Looney was considered a 5-star prospect and was certainly the most impressive recruit in Wisconsin back in the class of 2014. A 6’9 forward originally from Milwaukee, he actually made his way out west, heading to UCLA to play for coach Steve Alford and the Bruins. Looney would spend just that single season in college before heading to the pros, but he had himself a decent enough impact.
He averaged 11.6 points and 9.2 rebounds a game for the Bruins that season, emerging as the top rebounder on a team that made the Sweet Sixteen. He had a slew of double-doubles, including in seven of his first ten games, and had a 27-point, 19-rebound outing against Stanford in early January. Looney would add one final double-double in the second-round Tourney win over UAB before ending his career with a Sweet Sixteen loss against Gonzaga.
Looney’s freshman year was impressive and earned him Second Team All-Pac-12 honors as a result. He was one of the best rebounders in the conference and also finished the season among the Pac-12’s steals leaders. He was an excellent frontcourt piece for the Bruins, even if he wasn’t a flashy star or scoring machine. After that season, he became a late first-round draft pick of the 2015 NBA Draft by the Golden State Warriors and remains with that franchise, picking up three NBA championship rings in the process.
