5. Hunter Thompson – Wyoming

Today’s focus starts with a 6’10 forward from Pine Bluffs. Thompson arrived on campus at Wyoming way back in 2017, redshirting his first season before becoming a solid piece for the Cowboys. The Wyoming basketball program has undergone quite the transformation during Thompson’s tenure, as has his role on the team.

After sitting out that first season, Thompson had his best year as a freshman, averaging 8.8 points and shooting 37% from long range. He had a career-high 25 points in an early loss to ETSU, but Wyoming mightily struggled for his first two seasons. Thompson averaged at least sevin points in each of his first three seasons but found himself less involved during his senior season. This past year he started just three games, saw more limited minutes, and averaged just 2.7 points a game, mostly from long range. He did at least have six points in Wyoming’s first NCAA Tournament game in a decade.

Thompson’s role changed as the Cowboys became a better program, but that doesn’t mean he wasn’t a good or important player. He’s still one of Wyoming’s better shooters in recent memory, even if he’s not been as utilized the last few seasons. Thompson will return next season for a sixth and final season in Laramie, though we’re not exactly sure what type of role he’ll have, with high expectations for the Cowboys this year.
