Kansas Basketball: 2022-23 season preview for the Jayhawks
By Matt Melton
Projected Starting Lineup
- PG Dajuan Harris Jr
- SG Kevin McCullar Jr
- SF Gradey Dick
- PF Jalen Wilson
- C Zach Clemence
With two starters returning from a year ago, as well as an experienced player transferring in, the lone real questions surrounding the Kansas Basketball 2022-23 starting lineup comes at small forward and center. Dick is likely the favorite to start at the three, while the center position could be the biggest question of all as Clemence or Udeh in particular are potential starting options.
Non-Conference Schedule
- Omaha – 11/7
- North Dakota State – 11/10
- Duke – 11/15 (State Farm Champions Classic, Indianapolis, IN)
- Southern Utah – 11/18
- NC State – 11/23 (Battle 4 Atlantis, Bahamas – Play on 11/24 and 11/25 as well, Opponents TBD)
- Texas Southern – 11/28
- Seton Hall – 12/1 (Big 12/Big East Battle)
- @ Missouri – 12/10
- Indiana – 12/17
- Harvard – 12/22
- @ Kentucky – 1/28 (SEC/Big 12 Challenge)
Kansas Basketball has multiple intriguing matchups scheduled during their non-conference slate, headlined by a showdown with Duke on November 15 in the State Farm Champions Classic. The Jayhawks will also play in the 2022 Battle 4 Atlantis from November 23-25, beginning with a matchup against NC State (Field also includes Butler, BYU, Dayton, USC, Tennessee, and Wisconsin).
The Jayhawks will also play two true road games in the non-conference, both of which are trips to the SEC against Missouri and Kentucky. The matchup against the Wildcats will come in the SEC/Big 12 Challenge, which will happen in the middle of conference play, which also begins on 12/31 at home against Oklahoma State.
Predictions
In conclusion, here are a few preseason predictions that I believe will happen for the Jayhawks during the 2022-23 season:
- Kansas wins at-least 25 games, makes an NCAA Tournament appearance, and reaches at-least the Sweet 16
- Kansas will contend for their third Big 12 regular season title in four years, finishing at-least top three in the conference this season
- Gradey Dick will be a contender for the Big 12 Freshman of the Year, while also ranking among the Jayhawks top scorers
- Jalen Wilson will receive All-Big 12 honors for the second consecutive season, likely making either First or Second Team
- Ernest Udeh Jr will emerge at center for the Jayhawks, and be in consideration for Big 12 All-Freshman honors at seasons end
