Belmont Basketball: 2022-23 season preview and outlook for the Bruins
Season outlook for the Bruins
This is an extremely interesting season for Belmont supporters. Bruin fans expect twenty or more wins and a first or second-place finish in their conference race. Belmont will not have a big collapse, but this season may be one of adjustment for the Nashville school.
The university is used to success in all forms. Belmont University has set enrollment records for twenty straight school years and is one of the top academic universities nationally. Bruin athletic teams have routinely led the OVC grade point average. This is a university that expects and builds for success.
Alexander has accumulated a .606 winning percentage during his career, with a .802 success rate at Belmont. His teams are well-schooled and play efficient basketball. Like Rick Byrd before him, Alexander builds with players he can train and fit the kind of roles the Bruins like to fill.
There will be no big drop off at Belmont despite the jump into the Missouri Valley Conference. While Belmont plays at a much faster pace than most Valley schools, the Bruins will need to adjust to the ‘grind-it-out’ MVC approach. The Bruins are fundamentally sound on both ends of the floor, so they also play solid defense.
Valley teams are bigger and stronger than OVC squads and Alexander admits it won’t be easy.
“We’ve built a culture of winning,” says Alexander. “But we have more questions than we typically have. We’ll have to learn and a lot of development is needed.”
The Bruins open MVC play on December first at home against Valparaiso.
