Mountain West Basketball: Preseason power rankings for 2022-23 season
The Broncos won the regular-season Mountain West Basketball title last season on the strength of the team defense. That may take a hit with guys like Emmanuel Akot and Abu Kigab gone, two players that played a big role on the offensive end as well. In terms of filling the void of the athletic wing, Texas Tech transfer Chibuzo Agbo has the chance. The 6’7 forward and former top-100 prospect could thrive at his new location.
He’ll be playing next to returning guard Marcus Shaver, who was second on the team with 13.3 ppg. The 6th-year senior likely will be playing some point but is more than capable of being the lead guard of the offense. 6’7 forward Tyson Degenhart is a breakout candidate to watch after averaging 9.9 ppg and 3.9 apg as a freshman and should have a more sizeable role.
The frontcourt will be key to Boise State’s success this season, especially if freshman forward Sadraque NgaNga can have a major impact. He’s the highest-ranked commit out of high school as a top-50 prospect but at one time was viewed a five-star prospect. Injuries derailed his momentum but assuming he’s fully healthy, could easily be the best freshman in the Mountain West.
The Broncos may have lost a little bit on defense but should be better offensively overall, keeping them in the top-tier of the Mountain West projections.
