6. UConn has a bunch of new guards to work with

With both RJ Cole and Tyrese Martin gone, along with multiple underclassmen transferring out, the Huskies needed to add multiple perimeter players in the offseason. They did just that, landing four players that had sizeable roles at their previous stops.

The big name of the group is Tristen Newton, who averaged over 17 ppg and 5.0 apg at East Carolina this past season. The All-AAC guard has the chance of being the starting point guard for UConn and could be the most important of the group. Nahiem Alleyne was a double-digit scorer and shot over 37% from three-point range at Virginia Tech, while Joey Calcaterra (San Diego) and Hassan Diarra (Texas A&M) add depth.

UConn does have a pair of key returning players to watch in Jordan Hawkins and Andre Jackson, although the ladder may miss some time to start the season with a hand injury. They’ll need to figure out who the lead guard is and have some kind of hierarchy or risk having to play a bunch of different lineups and risk losing games early on.

Ultimately, this team will be about All-Big East center Adama Sanogo, who’ll be the team’s best player. He gives the Huskies a great floor and a chance to contend for a top-tier spot in the standings. The ceiling will come down to the guard play and who emerges as the go-to guys.
