Big East Basketball: 10 biggest storylines and questions for 2022-23 season
4. How much will Georgetown improve with a whole new roster?
Things were as bad as possible for the Hoyas, not winning a single Big East Basketball game last season. And with the exception of Dante Harris and Ryan Mutombo. just about everyone from the rotation is gone. In their place are eight transfers in the portal and a pair of incoming freshmen.
The most notable name is the reunion with center Qudus Wahab, who was a double-digit scorer at Georgetown and played a big part in the team’s postseason surprise to the NCAA Tournament in 2021. His departure to Maryland a year ago was bad for both sides, as he didn’t play well and the Hoyas didn’t have any good frontcourt play. That should change with both he and UConn transfer Akok Akok inside.
The backcourt should be very interesting, as there are a lot of capable scorers. Wayne Bristol, Bryan Mozone, and Primo Spears were double-digit scorers at the mid-major level, while Jay Heath shot 43% from three-point range at Arizona State in the backcourt. And on the wing, LSU transfer Brandon Murray is a national breakout candidate to watch.
On paper, there’s potential for Georgetown to be a good offense. But do they have a true point guard? And can Akok and Wahab play together without sacrificing spacing? And what do they need to do in order to make sure head coach Patrick Ewing sticks around for another year? No team has as many questions in the Big East as the Hoyas, setting up a very consequential campaign.
