Maryland Basketball: 2022-23 season preview and outlook for Terrapins
By Karl Heiser
Projected Starters
Guard – Jahmir Young (Graduate)
A transfer from Charlotte, Young is Maryland’s most important offseason addition. He was awarded All-Conference USA honors in each of his three seasons with the 49ers. Coming off a year where he averaged 19.6 points per game on 46.8% shooting from the field, Young’s scoring punch will be key for a Terrapins team that loses its two leading scorers from 2021-22. As the first DeMatha Catholic product to suit up for UMD in twenty years, Young is also early evidence of Kevin Willard’s emphasis on going after local DMV recruits.
Guard – Donald Carey (Graduate)
After stops at a few different schools throughout his college career, Carey lands at Maryland as a graduate transfer. Last season with Georgetown, he averaged 13.5 points, 4.4 rebounds, and 2.9 assists per game. Carey has been consistently effective from three-point range, shooting over 38% from distance in each of the last three seasons. His experience and perimeter play will make him a valuable contributor for Maryland Basketball this year.
Guard – Hakim Hart (Senior)
Hart is a holdover from the Turgeon era who has plenty of tools but has never been utilized in a way that maximizes his skillset. Willard has indicated that will change this season. Over his three seasons in College Park, the 6’6″ wing has averaged 7.0 points, 2.9 rebounds, and 1.6 assists per game while shooting 47.0% from the field and 30.6% from three. He may be due for a mini breakout of sorts as a senior.
Forward – Donta Scott (Senior)
Scott is the best returner for Maryland Basketball and arrives off a year where he averaged 12.6 and 6.2 rebounds per contest. He will be an extremely important piece given the Terps’ general lack of experience in the frontcourt. Scott shot 43.8% from three-point range as a sophomore and would certainly be a real matchup problem if he can find that stroke again this season.
Center – Julian Reese (Sophomore)
Although the coach who recruited him is gone and his sister Angel Reese transferred to LSU, sophomore big Julian Reese stuck around. The former four-star showed promise as a freshman but will need to rebound more and foul less to approach his potential. Without many options to back him up at the five, Reese’s development is key for Maryland’s success this season.
