Maryland Basketball: 2022-23 season preview and outlook for Terrapins
By Karl Heiser
Season Outlook
Many national media have tabbed this Maryland team as one destined for the basement of the Big Ten. However, the Terps’ experienced starting five should make them more competitive than most are giving them credit. In what is generally considered a down year for the Big Ten, could Maryland make some noise?
In short, yes, but probably not much. The most pressing issue for Maryland is limited depth at almost every position. There aren’t many dependable, experienced contributors outside the starting five, which will leave them vulnerable to dropping games that seem winnable. These depth issues will likely become apparent around the middle of the conference slate. However, shorter rotations in the postseason could make Maryland a threat to pull off an upset or two once the Big Ten Tournament rolls around. Ultimately, expect the Terrapins to wind up in the 8-10 range of the conference standings and potentially qualify for the NIT if they can manage a middle-of-the-pack finish.
With new head coach Kevin Willard bringing some excitement back to the program, now is definitely a good time for Maryland Basketball fans to start buying back in. However, the Terps will simply not have enough to compete for a Big Ten title this year. A promising 2023 class awaits and the best years of the Willard era are still yet to come.
The Terrapins may pick up a couple nice wins this year, but the development of young pieces such as Julian Reese, Noah Batchelor, and Ike Cornish will be important for future success. This is primarily a season for Kevin Willard to lay the foundations for what will hopefully be a program that consistently competes for Big Ten titles and NCAA Tournament berths.
