8. Tennessee Tech Golden Eagles – Head coach John Pelphrey

2021-22 record: 11-21 overall, 7-10 in the OVC

Head coach John Pelphrey experienced success in other jobs, but his Golden Eagle squads have struggled. His three-year record of 25-65 is surprising after posting a winning record across his other nine seasons.

This edition of TTU basketball was hit with major transfer issues. Jr Clay moved to Tennessee State, Keishawn Davidson transferred to Belmont and Kenny White took off for Murray State. Each was a double-digit scorer and in Clay’s case, a four-time, all-league player.

Pelphrey did what all the coaches are doing during the ‘portal pandemic’, he went looking for talent in the portal. Four new Division 1 players join the squad and Ty Perry could be the best of the bunch.

Perry is a grad transfer from Lafayette where he averaged 11.9 points, 3.8 rebounds and three assists last season and has accumulated 778 career points. OVC coaches and SIDs voted Perry who made 60 three-pointers last season to the preseason all-league team.

Significant returners Diante Wood and Daniel Ramsey are back and are important role players. Pelphrey says Ramsey has had the best summer workouts of his career.

Morehead State transfer Jaylen Sebree is a 6’9 banger whose playing time was limited due to playing behind big man Johni Broome. The steal of this recruiting class could be Grant Slatten. After an outstanding prep career, the 6’5 guard signed with Mississippi. Slatten played just six games with the Rebels and transferred back to his home state.

TTU seems to always be in transition. Pelphrey has landed talented freshmen and several junior college players of note. If cohesion occurs, then this ranking could be to low.
