4. 4 interesting teams make for a competitive Empire Classic

This year’s field of the notable tournament includes Syracuse, St. John’s, Richmond, and Temple. Three of them have already taken a loss, while the Red Storm did get a 20-point victory over Nebraska in the Gavitt Games but hasn’t done anything notable either so far.

The Owls have been the most fascinating team so far in this group. They’re 2-2 on the season, with wins over both Villanova and Rutgers, while also losing to both Wagner and Vanderbilt in overtime. Khalif Battle was the star scorer (when healthy) a year ago but so far it’s Damian Dunn (24 ppg) that’s leading the way.

Richmond made the NCAA Tournament a year ago and lost a ton of talent but did bring back star forward, Tyler Burton. He’s averaging 19 ppg but the Spiders also have recent losses to Wichita State and College of Charleston. And Syracuse lost at home against Colgate, giving up 80 points to the mid-major.

The backcourt duo of Posh Alexander and Andre Curbelo have looked solid so far, while DePaul transfer David Jones is leading the way offensively. It’ll be interesting how these teams face off against one another in this 4-team tourney, as the one that goes 0-2 likely will struggle to get an at-large big in March.
