13. Kentucky (3-2)

John Calipari’s team continues to be one of the best programs in all of college basketball. Oscar Tshiebwe is back and Kentucky looks like a top team, but did this past week dull some of those expectations for this season? The Wildcats have elite talent and a pretty deep lineup but struggled this past week with a couple of tough games.

Tshiebwe got back on the court on Tuesday night, but Kentucky fell 86-77 to Michigan State in double overtime, struggling in that final period after he had fouled out. Still, Tshiebwe had 22 points and 18 rebounds while Sahvir Wheeler added 16 points of his own. The Wildcats were back on track with a 106-63 home win over South Carolina State, led by 17 points from CJ Fredrick, but Sunday was another challenge. They traveled to Spokane and lost 88-72 to #2 Gonzaga, even with Tshiebwe’s 20 points and 15 rebounds against the talented Bulldogs.

Those two losses were to two of the best teams in the nation; it’s not the end of the world in Lexington. Getting their whole lineup together this week was a great step forward and the Wildcats did look solid at times in both of these losses. They’ll get chances in the coming weeks to figure these things out, starting with an easy home game against North Florida this week. Is Kentucky still the favorite in the SEC?
