2023 Bracketology: UMass, Virginia among teams looking to build on momentum
Maryland Terrapins 6-0
With MTEs all but over for the season, not many teams made as big of a statement as Kevin Willard’s Maryland Terrapins. They entered the hall of fame tip-off 3-0 with wins over Niagara, Western Carolina, and Binghamton by an average of 22 points. They then arrived at Mohegan Sun and proceeded to blow out a very good Saint Louis team by 28, holding the Billikens to 36% shooting from the field and 25% from deep.
Waiting for them on the finals were Jim Larranaga’s Miami Hurricanes, and the Terps handled them just as easily, 88-70 to take home the title. Senior Donta Scott led the way scoring 49 points in two games and they won the battle on the glass by 25.
The Terps have a big week ahead with two games and in order to keep that momentum rolling they will have to avoid an upset on Tuesday when they take on the disappointing 0-6 Louisville Cardinals. After three one-point losses to begin the year, the Cardinals have lost their last three games by an average of 22.3 points to Arkansas, Texas Tech, and Cincinnati.
Then on Friday, Maryland gets a conference game in when they host No. 16 Illinois. This will be a big test for Kevin Willard’s veteran squad against Brad Underwood’s remade Illini team. The 6-0 Terps have to keep their strong start going this week because their next three games are against Wisconsin, Tennessee, and UCLA.
