Iowa State Cyclones – Wins over Villanova and UNC, loss to UConn
The Cyclones were an unknown factor heading into the PK85 Tournament and even after beating Villanova in the opening round, it wasn’t until the upset win over No. 1 North Carolina that made them into a serious threat. The new-look roster remains formidable and gave UConn a fight in the title game on Sunday.
Even if Villanova falters this season, the UNC win should be a signature victory Iowa State can use going forward. And they still have a win at Iowa to look forward to before Big 12 play. Last season, the Cyclones struggled in league play but got an at-large bid due to their non-conference success. In case that happens again, Iowa State can rely on the Tar Heels’ victory in case they’re on the bubble again.
UConn Huskies – Wins over Oregon, Alabama, and Iowa State
The Huskies won the PK85 Invitational Tournament and landed a trio of wins over power conference opponents. Oregon has struggled so far but once they get healthy, should become a good win on the resume. Iowa State looks to be a threat once again, while the Crimson Tide victory should carry the most weight.
With Florida and OK State not looking overly strong, these three wins UConn could be the best it gets in the non-conference, making their success in Feast Week very important. And not only that, they may be the team to beat in the Big East.
